Biography of Professor YUAN Xue-Feng:

PhD from the University of Manchester 1989, UK, a Chartered Physicist, a Fellow of the Institute of Physics (FInstP) and a Fellow of Royal Society Chemistry (FRSC). Professor YUAN is the President, Chinese Society of Rheology (CSR), the Chinese Delegate of the International Committee on Rheology (ICR), a council member of the Chinese Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, and a member of the Physical Gases Committee, the Chinese Society of Aerodynamics. He has more than 40 years research experience in theoretical, computational and experimental rheology of complex fluids. In the area of non-equilibrium dynamics of complex fluids, he proposed a thermodynamics-consistent model to study intriguing physical phenomena originated from strong coupling between dynamics of phase transitions and viscoelastic fluid flow[1]; proposed various novel numerical strategies for modelling viscoelastic fluid flows[2] and developed a framework for fully integrating various numerical methods into a multiple scale computational rheology platform[3] with recent interests on large scale parallel computing of turbulence drag reduction and elastic turbulence[4]; he invented a rheo-chip technology for in-situ rheological characterization of complex fluids and their microstructures[5,6]. After 27 years abroad in UK, he returned to China and served in full time as the founding director of the National Supercomputing Center in Guangzhou for running “Tianhe-2” supercomputer, which was ranked the world fastest supercomputer six times successively from 2013 to 2016. He then founded Institute for Systems Rheology at Guangzhou University, holding a professorship until his retirement in July 2023. In China, he has led 15 research projects including the "Human-Machine Collaborative Intelligent Operating System" and "Operational Environment Simulator with Digital Twin Platform" funded through the Innovation 2030: the Next-Generation Artificial Intelligence Initiative from the Ministry of Science and Technology, China, along with various national, provincial, and municipal scientific research programs. He led the successful bid for hosting the 20th International Conference on Rheology in 2027 (ICR2027) in Guangzhou, China.
